Union Cabinet Approves Tough New Law: Up to 10 Years Jail, Rs 10 Crore Fine for Exam Leaks
The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a draft Bill that introduces stringent punishments for those involved in leaking examination papers. The new law provides for a jail term of up to 10 years and a penalty of up to Rs 10 crore. It also gives statutory backing to fast-track courts and mandates a five-month timeline for the investigation and trial of such cases, according to official sources.
The approval came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a midnight video address on Thursday, announced the government's decision to set up fast-track courts and enact a tough new law to combat exam paper leaks. Modi had invited suggestions from the public on the issue.
In an Instagram post on Friday, Modi thanked citizens for their responses and suggestions. "Thank you, friends. I got the opportunity to talk to you at midnight. The way you have responded to my video, positive suggestions given by you, thanks to everybody. Your love will continue to flow; our relations will continue with more bonding. Thank you, thank you friends," he said in a video message.
The draft Bill is expected to be introduced in the upcoming session of Parliament. The legislation aims to deter organised cheating and leaks that have plagued competitive examinations in recent years, affecting the prospects of millions of students. The five-month timeline for investigation and trial is intended to ensure swift justice.
