Ukraine War Toll Exceeds 2 Million Military Casualties, Says US Think Tank
A study published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a US-based think tank, has estimated that combined Russian and Ukrainian military casualties in the war in Ukraine have exceeded two million since the invasion began in February 2022.
According to the report, Russian forces have suffered between 400,000 and 450,000 fatalities out of a total of 1.4 million casualties, which include those killed, wounded, and missing. Ukrainian forces have incurred between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties, with fatalities estimated between 125,000 and 150,000 during the same period.
The CSIS report highlights that Russian fatalities in Ukraine are more than four times greater than all US combat fatalities in all wars combined since World War II. The ratio of Russian to Ukrainian casualties has likely risen to around eight to one in the first half of this year, the think tank added.
These figures are based on open-source intelligence and official statements, though independent verification of exact casualty numbers remains difficult due to the ongoing conflict and limited access to battlefield data.
