Two Police Constables Arrested for Raping Minor Dalit Girl in Bhopal
Two Madhya Pradesh Police constables have been arrested on charges of raping a minor Dalit girl after abducting her in Bhopal, authorities confirmed on Friday (July 24, 2026). The incident, which occurred on July 22, was reported to the Jahangirabad police station by the survivor the following day, leading to the registration of a case.
Bhopal Additional Commissioner of Police (law and order) Shailendra Singh Chauhan identified the accused as constables Santosh Sen and Jitendra Singh. Both have been taken into custody. According to Mr. Chauhan, the complainant stated that the two constables called the minor girl, took her in a car to an undisclosed location, where one of them raped her.
A case has been registered under relevant legal provisions, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 137(2). A medical examination of the survivor has been conducted.
A police officer from Jahangirabad, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the accused lured the girl on the pretext of taking her to a birthday party. They then drove to a secluded spot where Santosh Sen raped her. After the assault, they dropped the girl at a city square. The officer confirmed that the girl is now at home and in stable health.
The arrests have drawn attention to the misuse of authority by law enforcement personnel. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the accused had any prior involvement in similar offences. The case underscores the vulnerability of marginalised communities, particularly Dalit women and girls, to sexual violence, and the need for swift judicial action.
