Trump's covert Air Force One exit in Turkey: decoy or danger? Questions mount

A covert operation that reportedly moved President Donald Trump off Air Force One in a cargo container during a stop in Turkey has raised serious questions about U.S. security protocols and the safety of the press traveling with the President.

According to a report by The Washington Post, Mr. Trump secretly exited the presidential plane on July 8 while it was on the ground in Turkey, as his security team sought to evade an assassination threat. The President had boarded the jet in full view of cameras, but then slipped into one of the cargo containers on hydraulic lifts, transferring to a smaller U.S. Air Force aircraft positioned nearby.

The operation left about a dozen journalists, traveling in a separate section of Air Force One with no access to the President, unaware of the switch. They flew out of Turkey on the plane despite the apparent threat, which the Wall Street Journal reported included a possible shoulder-to-air missile strike. The same report said Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials remained on the plane.

Journalists on board noted an unusual Secret Service order to lower window shades during takeoff, a measure rarely taken outside combat zones. Several members of the traveling press expressed anger at having unwittingly served as decoys. "That's not my job. I cover the President. Reporters take risks as part of the job, but not on behalf of the President," one unnamed White House reporter told the Post.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday called for Congress to be briefed "on the Iranian threats against the president, the extraordinary measures taken to get him out of Turkey." The White House has not directly responded to the alleged plane swap. In a statement, Mr. Trump's communications director, Steven Cheung, said, "There are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats."

Mr. Trump's trip to the NATO summit had already drawn attention because he arrived on a luxury Boeing 747 reportedly gifted by Qatar, which was not fitted with anti-missile security systems. At the time, Mr. Trump claimed the new plane was being sent ahead for U.S. troops in Britain to tour. He later returned to it for the flight to Washington.

The incident has historical parallels. In 2000, Bill Clinton switched presidential planes at the last minute while travelling from India to Pakistan, using a decoy aircraft carrying Secret Service agents. Joe Biden's 2023 visit to Ukraine was also kept under strict secrecy, though he was accompanied by a reporter and photographer.

The latest revelations raise critical questions about the extent to which journalists are exposed to risk, the communication gaps between the White House and the press corps, and whether such security operations adhere to established protocols. They also underscore the heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, which is at war with America, according to the original report.
