US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of a major escalation after American forces intercepted what the military described as a 'surprise attack' by Tehran. The incident occurred at a US base in Jordan, ending a brief period of relative calm in the region.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Trump said the US would 'be hitting them hard' and promised retribution, though he did not specify the nature of the response. His comments followed a statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) that it had thwarted an attempted attack by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) using multiple ballistic missiles.

The United States has not released details on casualties or damage. The incident marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries, which have been at odds over Iran's nuclear programme and regional influence. Trump has previously adopted a tough stance on Iran, including withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal and ordering the killing of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in 2020.

Iran has not officially commented on the alleged attack. The development comes as the US continues to maintain a military presence in the Middle East, with bases in several countries including Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait.
