Trump Accuses Democrats of Communism at Evangelical Conference
Former US President Donald Trump addressed the Road to Majority conference in Washington, an annual gathering of evangelicals organised by the Faith and Freedom Coalition. In his speech, Trump criticised the Democratic left, labelling them as 'hardcore, godless communists' and describing their ideology as 'an uncontrollable form of cancer' that poses a serious threat to the country.
Trump spoke after three progressive candidates won Democratic primary elections in New York. He alleged that the left's agenda would lead to America's downfall. The former president also attacked the administration of President Joe Biden, calling it 'evil' and 'incompetent,' and repeated unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 election was 'rigged.'
This was Trump's tenth appearance at the conference, which drew around 3,000 attendees. Despite facing multiple legal challenges—including felony convictions for business fraud, allegations of affairs, and accusations of abusing office—Trump remains popular among evangelical voters. Many conservative Christians view him as a vehicle for political power rather than a moral exemplar.
Trump boasted about policies such as recognising only two genders, creating a White House faith office, and claiming credit for 'saving Christians throughout the world' via military actions. He also repeated false claims of widespread election fraud and called for voting restrictions, singling out Senator Lisa Murkowski for criticism.
The Faith and Freedom Coalition has consistently supported Trump, even after his conviction for paying hush money to a porn star. The conference occurred around the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that ended the federal right to abortion. Trump avoided discussing abortion in detail, having previously expressed concerns about strict bans and blamed them for Republican losses in the 2022 midterms.
