Tourist Plane Crash Near Peru's Nazca Lines Kills 13

A small tourist plane crashed into a field near the ancient Nazca Lines in southern Peru on Saturday, August 1, 2026, killing 13 people, local authorities reported. The aircraft went down in a rural area outside the city of Nazca shortly after being on a sightseeing flight over the famed geoglyphs, according to a statement issued by the municipal government on Facebook.

The plane had departed from the nearby city of Ica and was operated by Aerodiana, a Peruvian airline that specialises in scenic flights over the Nazca Lines. The municipal government identified the aircraft as a Cessna Grand Caravan, a single-engine turboprop commonly used for tourist flights. On its website, Aerodiana says it has offered such flights over the Nazca Lines for the past 14 years. The airline was not immediately available for comment after the crash.

Peruvian authorities said that the accident is under investigation and that no further details, including the identities or nationalities of those killed, have been released so far. Emergency teams were sent to the crash site, and the area has been secured for investigation.

The Nazca Lines are among South America's most significant archaeological sites. Spread over an arid plateau about 400 kilometres southeast of Lima, they consist of hundreds of geometric patterns, animal figures and straight lines etched into the desert surface. The designs, which include a hummingbird, a spider, a monkey and a condor, are believed to have been created between 500 BCE and 500 CE by the Indigenous Nazca culture. They were made by removing the dark, iron-coated pebbles to reveal the lighter earth underneath. Because some of the figures are hundreds of metres long, they can be fully appreciated only from an elevated vantage point.

The lines were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and are a key driver of tourism in the region. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors take small planes from Nazca or Ica to view the geoglyphs from the air, making sightseeing flights a significant part of the local economy.

Saturday's crash is a reminder of the risks associated with low-altitude scenic flights, though the cause has not yet been established. Investigators are expected to examine factors such as weather conditions, the aircraft's maintenance record and the pilot's experience. The municipal government has not indicated any immediate suspension of flights, and operations in the area are expected to continue while the inquiry proceeds.
