Toddler with rare skull condition gets pioneering treatment using custom springs

In a medical milestone, a one-year-old boy from Derbyshire has become the first patient in the world to receive a new treatment for a rare skull deformity using custom-designed “super-elastic” springs. The procedure, reported by Sky News, marks a significant advance in paediatric surgery.

The boy, identified as Rory Potter, was diagnosed with severe sagittal craniosynostosis shortly after birth. This congenital condition, which affects approximately 1 in 2,000 babies, causes the bones in a baby’s skull to fuse prematurely before birth. This restricts natural brain expansion and leads to an abnormally long and narrow head shape.

If left untreated, craniosynostosis can result in developmental delays, vision or hearing impairment, and breathing difficulties. The condition requires timely surgical intervention to relieve pressure on the brain and allow normal growth.

Traditionally, surgeons address the condition in infancy by inserting stainless steel springs into the skull to widen the bone gaps. However, experts at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and University College London (UCL) have refined this technique using springs made from nitinol, a flexible nickel-titanium alloy known for its “memory” properties.

Using detailed 3D digital models created from CT scans, doctors are able to design each nitinol spring to apply precise levels of force. The metal adapts naturally as the child grows, offering several advantages over older methods. According to the surgical team, the new technology provides greater precision, reduces the length of operations, lowers the need for blood transfusions, and may prevent the need for additional corrective procedures in the future.

Rory underwent a brief 45-minute procedure at GOSH to have the bespoke springs fitted. He required only a single night’s stay in the hospital. Nine weeks later, after his skull had successfully expanded to its target shape, the devices were removed.

Describing her son’s recovery, Rory’s mother said, “You wouldn’t know what he’s been through; he’s just like every little boy and hitting milestones, and he will have a great story to tell when he’s older.” She expressed gratitude to the medical team, adding, “Throughout the process, every element was explained so well. We knew what was going to happen and how; we received amazing support from each member of the team.”

Professor Owase Jeelani, consultant neurosurgeon at GOSH and a member of the team that developed the new springs, explained the reasoning behind the innovation. “Traditional stainless-steel springs are very robust, but they don’t always allow us to fine-tune the force on the skull,” he said. “These new nitinol springs give us much greater flexibility and, in some cases, can prevent the need for further surgery.”

Jeelani described the procedure as “important progress for children with craniosynostosis,” noting that so far the outcomes have been excellent. The success of this first case opens the door for wider use of nitinol springs in treating similar conditions, offering hope to families affected by craniosynostosis worldwide.
