Toddler seizure-free after advanced brain surgery at Hyderabad hospital
A two-year-old girl from Bhongir, Telangana, who had been experiencing daily seizures since the age of six months, is now seizure-free following advanced epilepsy surgery at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad. The procedure offers renewed hope for children with drug-resistant epilepsy, a condition that affects many young patients worldwide.
According to hospital officials, the girl had been on multiple anti-seizure medications for nearly a year with little improvement. Her recurrent seizures were accompanied by delays in speech, physical growth, and cognitive development, highlighting the severe impact of uncontrolled epilepsy on early childhood.
The child was admitted to the hospital on July 26. A comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation was conducted, including a brain MRI and PET-CT scan. These imaging studies identified a small lesion in the left temporal region, close to the amygdala and hippocampus. Doctors determined that this abnormal tissue was the likely source of the seizures.
N. Varsha Monica Reddy, senior paediatric neurologist at the hospital, explained the importance of early intervention. "The developing brain has a high degree of neuroplasticity," she said. "Controlling seizures at an early age is crucial to allow normal neurological development and to prevent irreversible damage."
The surgical team, led by senior neurosurgeon R. Ayyadurai, performed an anterior temporal lobectomy, a procedure in which the abnormal lesion and the surrounding epileptogenic tissue are removed. This surgery is considered a safe and effective option for children with focal epilepsy that does not respond to medication.
A post-operative EEG showed that the abnormal electrical activity detected before the surgery was no longer present. The girl recovered well, experienced no further seizures, and was discharged from the hospital within a week. Her parents expressed relief and gratitude, noting that their daughter now has a chance to lead a normal life.
Epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people globally, with a significant proportion being children. In many cases, anti-epileptic drugs provide adequate control. However, for those with drug-resistant epilepsy, surgical treatment can be life-changing. Advances in neuroimaging and surgical techniques have made such operations safer and more precise.
Medical experts stress that early evaluation for surgery is essential for children who continue to have seizures despite appropriate medical therapy. Delay in surgery can result in developmental regression, cognitive decline, and reduced quality of life. This case underscores the importance of specialized paediatric epilepsy care in India, particularly in emerging medical hubs such as Hyderabad.
While the long-term outcome for the girl remains to be monitored, the immediate success of the surgery marks a significant milestone in her recovery. The hospital has stated that she will receive follow-up care to ensure continued progress.
