TN CM announces ₹1,000-crore water, ₹1,400-crore sewage, ₹1,850-crore road projects
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday (September 2, 2026) made a suo motu statement in the Assembly, announcing a series of infrastructure projects for urban local bodies across the State. The projects span drinking water supply, underground sewage repairs, road restoration, waste-to-energy generation, tree planting, park development, and school infrastructure. Collectively, they aim to address pressing urban needs in cities and towns. The government said the projects were part of an ongoing effort to upgrade basic infrastructure in cities.
A suo motu statement is one made by a minister on his own initiative, without a question from members. It is used by ministers to inform the House of significant policy decisions. In his statement, the Chief Minister detailed allocations under the Vetri Tamilagam Vision, the State government’s framework for urban development. He said the projects would help modernise civic amenities.
In the drinking water sector, the government has set aside ₹1,000 crore for projects to improve supply in Madurai and Cuddalore Municipal Corporations, nine municipalities, and 30 town panchayats. In addition, 33 combined drinking water supply schemes will be further developed at a cost of ₹300 crore. These projects are intended to strengthen water distribution systems in growing urban areas and ensure adequate supply to residents.
For underground sewage infrastructure, Mr. Vijay announced that Madurai’s underground sewer lines, which were laid 40 years ago, would be repaired in the first phase at a cost of ₹1,400 crore. This is expected to address problems associated with ageing sewerage networks.
Two waste-to-energy projects were also approved. Tirunelveli Municipal Corporation will host a 9-MW plant with an investment of ₹256 crore, while Salem Municipal Corporation will receive a 10-MW plant costing ₹291 crore. The plants are designed to generate electricity from municipal solid waste, offering an alternative to landfilling and reducing environmental pollution.
The largest single allocation, ₹1,850 crore, is for repairing roads in Chennai and other urban local bodies that were damaged during the laying of drinking water and underground sewage lines. As part of the Vetri Tamilagam Vision, 35 km of roads covering 45 sq km in Chennai will be transformed into People-Friendly Modern Streets with footpaths. Safe access to schools will be created along 15 km of roads, and 105 road junctions will be improved under the Traffic Islands improvement programme. The Chennai-specific component is estimated at ₹110 crore, and similar projects in other municipal corporations will cost ₹165 crore. The repair works aim to restore damaged roads to safe and usable conditions.
In an effort to enhance environmental sustainability, the Chief Minister announced a programme to plant one crore tree saplings across cities. He described the initiative as a people’s movement, indicating that community participation would be encouraged to increase urban green cover.
Public recreation spaces are also being expanded. Major parks will be developed in Tiruchi, Tiruppur, and Pudukkottai at a cost of ₹130 crore. Additionally, 250 new parks will be created across the State at a cost of ₹175 crore, providing more green spaces for residents and improving the aesthetic appeal of cities.
Education infrastructure has not been overlooked. The government has allocated ₹335 crore to upgrade schools under urban local bodies, including new classrooms and modern facilities. This investment is aimed at improving the learning environment for students in urban areas.
The announcements come as the State government continues to focus on comprehensive urban development. Timelines for the projects were not specified in the Assembly statement. Implementation schedules and funding details were not provided in the suo motu statement.
