TMC MP Mahua Moitra refuses to vacate Nadia circuit house; administration cites maintenance order

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra said on Friday night that the Nadia district administration directed her to vacate the circuit house in Krishnanagar, where she had checked in earlier in the evening. The MP, who represents the Krishnanagar constituency, refused to leave, citing her entitlement as an MP and questioning the timing of the order.

In a post on social media, Ms. Moitra said she entered the circuit house at 6:30 pm and was given the room she usually stays in. Dinner was served to her at 9:20 pm, she said, and she received a call asking her to vacate at 9:47 pm. At 10:52 pm, she said she received a message with an order dated August 12 from the Deputy Collector of Nadia district, stating that her reservation at the circuit house had been temporarily suspended for annual maintenance.

"Outside the gates are huge crowd shouting Jai Shree Ram!" Ms. Moitra posted, sharing a video that showed a crowd gathered near the circuit house. In a separate video message, she said she would not vacate the premises and called on the administration to ensure security.

The MP's claims were echoed by leaders from several Opposition parties, who urged the administration to guarantee her safety. TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee expressed concern that a woman MP was being ordered out in the middle of the night, and criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its stance on women's empowerment. Congress leader Pawan Khera described the situation as a "sitting woman MP being forced to vacate the circuit house while a baying mob waits outside" and called on the Chief Minister, Prime Minister and Home Minister to intervene.

This incident comes weeks after Ms. Moitra said she was injured in an attack by a mob allegedly comprising BJP workers at a party office in Krishnanagar on July 1. She had claimed that stones and eggs were thrown at her. Similar incidents have been reported by TMC leaders since the BJP assumed power in May 2026.

As of late Friday night, there was no immediate response from the district administration or the state government regarding the specific sequence of events described by Ms. Moitra. The maintenance order issued by the Deputy Collector's office, however, was shared by the MP and appears to have been issued three days before the confrontation.
