TMC Councillor Sakir Ali Arrested by NIA in 2023 Ram Navami Clashes

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Sakir Ali in connection with the violence that occurred during Ram Navami processions in Rishra, Hooghly district, in 2023. The arrest took place on Tuesday after an early morning raid at the residence of his wife, former TMC MP Aparupa Poddar.

Sakir Ali represents Ward No. 4 of the Rishra municipality. According to NIA officials, he is accused of inciting clashes and orchestrating targeted violence during the religious processions. His arrest follows a prolonged investigation and statements from previously arrested co-accused individuals.

An NIA team, accompanied by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel, conducted the raid at Poddar's residence to execute a search warrant. Ali was initially detained for questioning at the scene but was formally arrested after investigators noted significant discrepancies and contradictions in his statements.

The 2023 Ram Navami violence in Rishra involved clashes between groups during a religious procession, resulting in injuries and damage to property. The NIA took over the investigation from local police, citing the case's serious nature and potential interstate links.

This arrest is part of a broader crackdown by the NIA on individuals allegedly involved in communal violence in West Bengal. The agency has previously arrested several others in connection with the same incident.

The arrest of a sitting councillor has drawn political reactions. TMC leaders have questioned the timing and manner of the arrest, alleging political vendetta. Meanwhile, the NIA has stated that the investigation is based on evidence and will continue to ensure justice.

Ali is expected to be produced before a special NIA court in Kolkata. The agency is likely to seek his custody for further interrogation.
