Three Dead in Arunachal Flash Floods as Monsoon Advances; North India Braces for Arrival in 5-6 Days

Heavy rainfall has caused flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh, resulting in three deaths, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Sunday that conditions are becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into northern states within the next five to six days.

The downpour has also affected Sikkim and north Bengal, with several areas experiencing waterlogging. In Mumbai, intense overnight showers on Monday led to over 100 mm of rainfall in just four hours in some suburbs, triggering waterlogging and traffic disruptions, according to civic officials.

In Arunachal Pradesh, a landslide caused by heavy rains has dammed a river, raising flood warnings for downstream areas in Assam. Local authorities have issued alerts and are monitoring the situation.

The IMD said that conditions are favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into some parts of the North Arabian Sea, as well as areas of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and other northern states over the next two to three days. This follows a delayed onset of the monsoon in several regions, with the national capital Delhi recording its warmest morning in two years as it awaits the seasonal rainfall.

The monsoon's progress is crucial for India's agriculture, as it provides the majority of the country's annual rainfall. The normal date for the monsoon to reach Delhi is June 29, and this year it has been delayed by about five days. The IMD tracks monsoon progress using parameters such as wind patterns, cloud cover, and rainfall data.

Authorities in affected regions are on high alert, with disaster response teams assisting in rescue and relief operations. The IMD has advised residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines. The public is advised to check official sources for the latest weather updates and warnings.
