Thierry Henry Analyses Cristiano Ronaldo's Positioning in Portugal's Draw with Congo

Portugal began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Congo at the Houston Stadium on Tuesday. The result left fans and analysts debating the performance of captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who struggled to make a significant impact as the team's central striker.

Joao Neves had given Portugal an early lead in the sixth minute, but Congo equalised through Yoane Wisse in the first half. Despite dominating possession for long periods, Portugal could not find a winner, and much of the post-match discussion centred on a key moment in the 68th minute involving Ronaldo and teammate Bruno Fernandes.

With the score still level, Francisco Conceicao carried the ball down the right flank and cut it back towards Ronaldo near the penalty spot. Rather than laying it off to the better-placed Fernandes, Ronaldo opted to shoot, but his effort went wide off the near post. The decision drew criticism from commentators and former players, including French football legend Thierry Henry, who was providing analysis for Fox Sports.

Henry, speaking alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, offered a technical breakdown of the sequence without directly criticising Ronaldo's abilities. "One thing that’s important, people, please at home, the team needs to score. (It’s) Not you (that) needs to score," Henry said. "Because Ronaldo wants to score, he goes in the path of the back pass, you see both players and it’s easier for you to defend. If he had gone to the six-yard box, Bruno Fernandes would have a tap in. And that’s my thing: The team needs to score. Not you."

Henry elaborated that when Conceicao was advancing on the right, Ronaldo should have made a run behind the three-man Congo defence instead of moving towards the ball carrier. Such a run, Henry argued, would have dragged defenders away and created more space for teammates arriving in the box. The analysis highlighted a recurring tactical concern: Ronaldo, deployed as a traditional number nine, did not consistently play the role of a centre-forward by occupying the penalty area and making selfless movements.

Throughout the match, Ronaldo managed only two shots, both off target. Apart from the 68th-minute miss, he sent another attempt wide in the 73rd minute. He often dropped deep or drifted wide, leaving Portugal without a focal point in attack. While his work rate was evident, the lack of clear chances underscored a difficult night for the 41-year-old forward.

After the match, Ronaldo did not speak to reporters but shared his thoughts on social media platform X. "It wasn’t the start we wanted, but this is far from over," he wrote. "Head up and focus on the next game." Portugal's next fixture in the group stage will be crucial as they seek to regain momentum in the tournament.

Ronaldo's achievements in the game are beyond question, and his commitment to the national team remains strong. However, as the tournament progresses, finding the right balance between his individual instincts and the team's tactical structure will be essential for Portugal's ambitions. With talented players like Bruno Fernandes and Rafael Leao in the squad, Portugal possess the firepower to progress, provided their tactical shape is optimised.

Henry's remarks served as a measured critique, emphasising collective success over individual milestones. As one of the game's most respected voices, his observations are likely to fuel further discussion as Portugal aim to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
