Telangana HC hears pleas against Speaker's dismissal of disqualification petitions

The Telangana High Court on Wednesday heard arguments on a batch of writ petitions challenging the decision of Assembly Speaker dismissing disqualification petitions filed by the BRS and BJP against nine MLAs who joined the ruling Congress after being elected on BRS tickets. The bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin adjourned the hearing to Thursday after senior counsel Vivek Reddy, appearing for BJP MLA A. Maheshwar Reddy, presented his arguments.

Vivek Reddy contended that the Speaker's decision was unconstitutional and ran contrary to the Supreme Court's verdicts in similar matters. He argued that the Speaker had claimed the decision was based on the conduct of the MLAs within the House, not outside it. He argued that the Speaker's reasoning was legally untenable and that the decision ignored the clear provisions of the Tenth Schedule as interpreted by the Supreme Court.

The bench, after listening to the submissions, scheduled further arguments for Thursday. The court is expected to hear the remaining counsels and may pass orders on the maintainability or merits of the petitions.
