Tejpal Gets 10 Years in Rape Case; Daughter Claims Innocence, Alleges Political Motive
The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday convicted former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal of raping a former junior colleague and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The court also directed him to surrender, overturning a trial court verdict that had acquitted him in May 2021.
The case dates back to November 2013, when the complainant alleged that Tejpal sexually assaulted her inside the elevator of a five-star hotel during the ThinkFest event in Goa. The incident reportedly occurred on November 7 and 8, 2013. Tejpal was arrested on November 30, 2013, and subsequently stepped down as editor-in-chief of Tehelka.
Following the conviction, Tejpal's daughter, Cara Tejpal, took to social media to assert her father's innocence. She claimed she has been examining the evidence for 13 years and is convinced he did not commit the crime. She urged others to review the evidence without being influenced by headlines.
In her post, Cara Tejpal also alleged that the conviction was engineered by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that Tehelka's journalism under her father had repeatedly exposed the party. She wrote, "Tarun Tejpal was more than a thorn in the side of the BJP government, and what better way to silence him than to portray him as the most reviled of all sinners - a rapist."
The claims made by Cara Tejpal are personal assertions and have not been independently verified. The BJP has not responded to these allegations at the time of this report.
Tejpal, who has maintained his innocence throughout the legal proceedings, said he believes he is a victim of politics and intends to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the High Court's decision. In an earlier statement, he had said, "I'm 62 and I believe I am a victim."

The trial court's acquittal in 2021 was challenged by the Goa government, leading to the High Court's reversal.
