Tata chief Chandrasekaran to co-chair Andhra Pradesh task force for 2047 vision

The Andhra Pradesh government has roped in Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran to co-chair its newly formed 'Task Force for Economic Development of Swarna Andhra Pradesh @ 2047'. The announcement was made by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday, August 16, after a meeting with Mr. Chandrasekaran at the State Secretariat in Amaravati.

In a message on social media platform X, Mr. Naidu said he was delighted to meet his 'old friend' and that Mr. Chandrasekaran would co-chair the task force, which will include intellectuals and industry leaders. The task force is part of the State government's long-term vision to transform Andhra Pradesh into a prosperous region by 2047, marking 100 years of India's independence.

The Chief Minister also revealed that Tata companies have agreed to partner in the Centre for Global Leadership on Competitiveness, to be set up by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in the State capital Amaravati. This centre is expected to focus on research, skill development, and policy advocacy to enhance the competitiveness of Indian industry, with a particular emphasis on Andhra Pradesh.

During the meeting, the two leaders explored several avenues for collaboration, including the possibility of setting up a development centre of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Visakhapatnam. A TCS development centre in the port city could significantly boost the region's IT sector and create employment opportunities for local youth. The discussions also covered enhancing air connectivity to and from Andhra Pradesh through Air India and Vistara, both Tata group airlines. Improved air connectivity is seen as crucial for attracting investment and promoting tourism in the State.

Mr. Chandrasekaran, who has been chairman of Tata Sons since 2017, is scheduled to step down from the role in February 2027. His appointment as co-chair of the task force comes at a time when Andhra Pradesh is seeking to rebuild its economy after the bifurcation of the State in 2014, which led to the loss of Hyderabad as its capital. The current government has prioritised industrial development, infrastructure, and human capital as key pillars of its growth strategy.

The task force is expected to provide a roadmap for sustainable economic development, leveraging the expertise of industry veterans and academicians. The involvement of Mr. Chandrasekaran, one of India's most respected business leaders, is seen as a significant boost for the State's efforts to attract both domestic and foreign investment.
