Tamil Nadu records 72,627 applications for MBBS, BDS courses; 950 new seats added

The Tamil Nadu Selection Committee has received a total of 72,627 applications for MBBS and BDS courses for the 2026-27 academic year. Of these, 41,723 are for government quota seats and 30,904 for management quota seats.

Originally, July 23 was the last date for submitting applications. However, the Selection Committee reopened the online application window until July 27 to accommodate candidates who had yet to submit their applications.

According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), 61,306 candidates from Tamil Nadu qualified in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). Officials noted that the higher number of applications (72,627) compared to state qualifiers could be due to several factors. Students from other states can apply for management quota seats, which are not domicile-based. Additionally, some duplicate or double applications may exist.

The NTA figure of 61,306 qualified candidates from Tamil Nadu is based on self-declared domicile information provided by candidates during the NEET application process. Officials clarified that the domicile is not verified by the NTA or the Medical Counselling Committee under the Directorate-General of Health Services, and the number only indicates a trend.

For the 2026-27 academic year, the National Medical Commission’s seat matrix shows that Tamil Nadu has added 950 additional MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges. With this addition, the total number of MBBS seats in 78 colleges across the state stands at 13,999.
