Tamil Nadu Law Minister: DMK MLA Arrest Not Political, No Interference

Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar has responded to the arrest of DMK MLA and former Minister Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, stating that the legal process will proceed without government interference or retaliation. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Mr. Nirmalkumar said the government will not interfere in the investigation or file false cases.

The Minister contrasted the current situation with past practices under both DMK and AIADMK governments, where, he claimed, arrests of party functionaries often led to behind-the-scenes 'settlements'. He asserted that under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's leadership, such adjustments no longer occur.

Mr. Nirmalkumar also highlighted the government's focus on ease of doing business and anti-corruption measures. He said the TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) government would not tolerate corruption in any public office, and that all party leaders are accountable to the people.

Regarding speculation that the TVK had urged Mr. Radhakrishnan to join the party, the Minister dismissed it as 'fake news', adding that the party has rejected many willing to join and carefully scrutinises new members.

The DMK has attributed the arrest to false reasons, but Mr. Nirmalkumar maintained that the MLA deserves punishment as per law. The arrest has sparked political debate, with the DMK alleging vendetta while the government insists on legal propriety.
