Tamil Nadu girl, 7, gives life to four through organ donation in Kerala

In an act of extraordinary compassion, the parents of a seven-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu have given a new lease of life to several patients in Kerala by donating her organs after she was declared brain-stem dead at a premier medical institute in Thiruvananthapuram.

Litiksha, daughter of Prakash and Pon Sindhuja of Thoothukudi, had been undergoing treatment for a brain tumour at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST). She had undergone her first surgery three years ago and was awaiting a second procedure when she slipped into brain death on Thursday morning at 8 a.m.

Even as they grappled with profound grief, her parents chose to donate her organs, hoping that their daughter would live on in others. Their decision has brought solace to several families awaiting organ transplants.

The child's liver, two kidneys, heart valves, and two corneas were retrieved for donation. While the liver and one kidney were transplanted into two patients at KIMSHEALTH hospital, the second kidney was given to a patient at Medical Trust Hospital in Ernakulam. The heart valves were retained by SCTIMST for a patient, and the corneas were harvested by a team from the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology here.

The entire process — from brain-death confirmation and certification to identifying and coordinating recipients, organ harvesting and allocation — was managed by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), which has been at the forefront of streamlining cadaver organ donation in the State.

Health Minister K. Muraleedharan paid tribute to Litiksha and expressed his condolences to the family, while acknowledging the courage and supreme sacrifice of the parents in their hour of grief. He noted that their decision had given life to others and inspired the community.

Kerala has consistently been a leader in organ donation in India, with a well-established network for cadaveric transplantation. The case is particularly significant as it involves a child donor from a neighbouring State, underscoring the cross-border cooperation in organ sharing under the existing rules. Organ donation in the country is governed by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994, which provides a legal framework for cadaver and living donor transplants. Kerala has developed robust protocols to ensure transparency and efficiency in the allocation process.

The retrieval of heart valves is especially critical for young patients with cardiac conditions, as these tissues can be used in procedures to repair congenital defects. This adds to the far-reaching impact of Litiksha's donation. Her two corneas have the potential to restore sight to two individuals, while her liver and kidneys have already begun functioning in recipients who had been battling life-threatening conditions.

Litiksha is survived by her sister, Sreesakthi. The family's decision, made at a moment of unbearable loss, stands as a powerful reminder of the potential to transform tragedy into hope. As the Indian organ donation system grapples with a severe shortage of donors, stories like Litiksha's highlight the life-saving impact of voluntary donation.

Medical experts emphasise that organ donation can save multiple lives and improve the quality of life for many others. They also stress the importance of consent and the need for more families to come forward to donate organs of their loved ones who have suffered brain death. Litiksha's parents have set an example that may encourage others to consider organ donation as a noble and life-affirming choice.

In her short life, Litiksha has left a lasting legacy. Her organs will continue to beat, see, and give life to others, ensuring that her memory is cherished not just by her family, but by the many strangers whose lives she has touched.

The court reserved its order and said it would keep the matter pending to monitor compliance.
