Survey: 83.3% Factory Reset Phones Before Resale, Yet Data Recovery Remains Possible

The market for pre-owned smartphones in India has expanded significantly, with consumers increasingly opting to resell their devices. However, data security remains a pressing concern. A recent survey by Cashify, an Indian re-commerce platform, highlights that while most users take precautions, sensitive data may still be recoverable from resold phones.

The survey, which included approximately 8,000 respondents, found that 83.3 per cent of participants performed a factory reset on their smartphones before resale. Despite this, 31 per cent of respondents reported that they had successfully retrieved deleted data from a phone. This suggests that factory resetting may not be a foolproof method for erasing all personal information.

Furthermore, 41.1 per cent of respondents acknowledged that a factory reset does not guarantee permanent data deletion. The survey also revealed that 74 per cent of participants are concerned about potential misuse of their personal data after selling their smartphone. These findings underscore the persistent anxiety among consumers regarding data privacy in the resale market.

The pre-owned smartphone market in India has seen robust growth, driven by rising smartphone penetration and the availability of refurbished devices. According to industry estimates, the market is expected to reach significant value in the coming years. However, data security remains a key barrier for many potential sellers.

Cashify’s survey, conducted among a diverse group of participants across urban and semi-urban areas, aimed to understand consumer behaviour and attitudes towards data privacy when reselling devices. The findings highlight a gap between perceived safety measures and actual data security. For instance, while a vast majority perform factory resets, the ability to recover deleted data indicates that more robust measures are needed.

Data security experts note that factory resets typically only remove file pointers, making data recovery possible with specialised software. For complete data sanitisation, methods such as encryption and data overwriting are recommended. As the pre-owned smartphone market continues to grow, addressing these privacy concerns is crucial for consumer confidence.

The survey also noted that 78 per cent of respondents value data privacy as a top concern when choosing to resell or buy a used smartphone. This has implications for the re-commerce industry, which must ensure that devices are properly sanitised before being resold. Some companies now offer data erasure services as part of their refurbishment process.

Consumer awareness is key. The survey suggests that many users are not fully aware of the limitations of factory resets. Educational initiatives and clearer guidelines from device manufacturers could help mitigate risks. For sellers, additional steps such as removing SIM cards, logging out of accounts, and encrypting data before resetting can enhance security.

Overall, the survey underscores the need for a multi-layered approach to data privacy in the pre-owned smartphone market. As technology evolves, so do methods for data recovery, making it essential for consumers and resellers to stay informed about best practices.
