Supreme Court restricts sharing of court proceedings on social media
The Supreme Court on Friday, July 24, 2026, issued an interim order barring the posting, reposting, or uploading of audio-video recordings of court proceedings on social media and other digital platforms without prior permission from the Secretary General of the Supreme Court or the Registrar Generals of the respective High Courts.
A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, issued the directive while hearing a petition that raised concerns about the misuse of live-streamed court proceedings and videos circulating on social media.
The order states: “As an interim measure, it is directed that there shall be no extraction, modification, dissemination… posting, reposting and uploading of audio-video visual recordings of judicial proceedings on social media or other digital platforms without prior permission of the secretary general of this court or the registrar general of the jurisdictional high courts.”
Senior advocate Vikas Singh, representing the petitioner, highlighted that videos of court proceedings were being misused on social media platforms. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta agreed with Singh's concerns, noting that some form of regulation is necessary.
The court has sought responses from the Centre and other relevant parties on the broader issue of regulating the use of court recordings. The matter is scheduled for further hearing.
