Srinagar Government Medical College Gets 50 Additional MBBS Seats from 2026

The Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar will see its annual MBBS intake increase by 50 seats, following approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC). The move raises the total number of seats from 200 to 250, starting from the academic year 2026-27.

An official spokesperson from the Health and Medical Education Department confirmed the development on Friday. The NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) issued a Letter of Permission (LoP) under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, formally approving the increase.

The department stated that the expansion aims to strengthen medical education and healthcare delivery in Jammu and Kashmir. With the additional seats, GMC Srinagar reinforces its position as a premier medical institution in the country, the spokesperson added.

The decision comes amid ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and address doctor shortages in the region. The new seats will provide more opportunities for aspiring medical students from Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere.
