Sonam Wangchuk: India Needs a Peaceful Revolution in Leadership Selection

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has called for a "peaceful revolution" in the way India selects its political leaders, warning that without significant change, the country may not remain a "respectable nation" by 2047. In a video message released ahead of Independence Day, he urged citizens to propose "selfless, fearless men and women of character and substance" to help shape the nation's future.

Mr. Wangchuk, known for his work in education reform in Ladakh, said he had been unwell and spent time reflecting on the country's trajectory. He noted that several neighbouring countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, which were once behind or equal to India, had moved ahead. He expressed concern that if current trends in per capita GDP continue, India would not achieve developed country status by 2047.

He also congratulated those who had participated in protests over the past two months, which he said led to the resignation of the Union Education Minister. However, he expressed doubt about the change, saying he did not foresee "any miracle" from the new minister either.

Mr. Wangchuk emphasised the close link between education and national progress. "As long as education is behind, the future of the country will also be behind," he said.

He argued that the issue of governance transcends political parties, pointing out that dissent has been suppressed by governments of different parties at various times. "It's not even a matter of parties," he said.

Drawing parallels with the anti-corruption movement of 2012-13, he said that despite a change in government, corruption and injustice have persisted and are now "2-3 times bigger" and "staring into our eyes".

Mr. Wangchuk called for a fundamental change in how leaders are chosen. "We need a peaceful revolution in this country, so that we can move forward with the right leaders," he said, adding that if leaders are wrong, the entire country goes astray.

He highlighted data on criminal cases against elected representatives, stating that almost half of Parliament members are accused of crimes, and one third face serious charges such as murder, rape and kidnapping. He questioned how the country could develop under such circumstances. These figures are his claims and have not been independently verified by this publication.

He stressed that his criticism was not directed at any particular party or the opposition, but at the system as a whole. "I am talking about the country," he said.

Mr. Wangchuk said he plans to bring together the best minds across the country to brainstorm about what must change and how. His remarks come at a time of heightened political activity ahead of Independence Day, and he has urged citizens to suggest potential leaders who could guide India towards a more prosperous and just future.
