Sonam Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike After Government Assurances

Noted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the central government regarding his demands for environmental protection in Ladakh. The activist, known for his pioneering work in sustainable development and education in the region, began his indefinite fast on January 21 to press for the implementation of the Ladakh Environment Protection Act and the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Wangchuk, who gained international recognition for introducing the 'Ice Stupa' technique to address water scarcity in the cold desert, had been demanding concrete steps to preserve Ladakh's fragile ecosystem and protect the rights of its indigenous communities. His fast drew widespread attention, with supporters from across the country expressing solidarity through social media campaigns and local gatherings.

According to sources, the government conveyed its commitment to address Wangchuk's concerns through a written communication, which included a promise to expedite the process of granting constitutional safeguards to Ladakh. The activist broke his fast on Saturday evening by consuming a glass of apple juice at a hospital in Leh, where he had been under medical observation due to deteriorating health.

Speaking after ending his fast, Wangchuk said, 'This is not a victory for me alone, but for the people of Ladakh and the environment. I will continue to monitor the government's actions.' He urged his supporters to remain vigilant and continue their peaceful advocacy for the region's sustainable development.

The development has been welcomed by local leaders and environmental groups, who hope that the assurances translate into concrete policies. Ladakh, a Union Territory since 2019, has witnessed growing concerns over unregulated tourism, infrastructure projects, and climate change impacts on its glaciers and biodiversity.
