Sharad Pawar, 85, admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital hours after Pune discharge
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday, hours after he was discharged from a multi-speciality healthcare centre in Pune where he had been under observation for cough and chest pain.
His daughter and Baramati MP Supriya Sule said in a social media post that the 85-year-old leader had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital. A detailed medical bulletin on his condition at the Mumbai hospital was not immediately available.
Mr. Pawar was admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune on November 2 after complaints of cough and pleuritic (chest) pain. Dr. Purvez K Grant, chief cardiologist and chairman and managing trustee of the hospital, said the NCP (SP) chief had been admitted for a general check-up and medical observation.
Pleuritic pain is chest pain that typically worsens while breathing, coughing or sneezing. It occurs when the pleura — the thin lining around the lungs — becomes inflamed, and doctors usually advise rest and tests to determine the cause.
After Mr. Pawar was admitted to the Pune hospital, Ms. Sule had said he was undergoing medical tests and that his health parameters were stable.
Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Mr. Pawar over the phone and enquired about his health, the leader's aide Vitthal Maniyar said. The Prime Minister advised him to take complete rest, Mr. Maniyar told reporters.
According to the aide, Mr. Modi spoke to Mr. Pawar with affection and respect and said that Ms. Sule and other colleagues were capable of handling responsibilities, and that he should therefore rest without worry.
Mr. Pawar thanked the Prime Minister for his concern and said he was taking rest and had no anxiety about the country's affairs as others were there to look after matters, Mr. Maniyar said.
Mr. Pawar, who turns 86 next month, has been a central figure in Maharashtra and national politics for more than five decades. He has served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra four times and as Union Minister for Agriculture and for Defence, and he founded the Nationalist Congress Party in 1999.
In 2023, a split led by his nephew Ajit Pawar saw the party's name and symbol go to the breakaway faction recognised by the Election Commission, while the group led by the senior Pawar was registered as the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar).
Leaders cutting across party lines have in recent years responded to news of his health with messages of support, and party workers in Pune and Mumbai have been following updates on his condition closely.
