Seven Killed in Firefighting Helicopter Crash in Argentina
At least seven people died when a firefighting helicopter crashed in Argentina's western San Juan province on Wednesday, a local official confirmed.
The Bell 412 aircraft was engaged in combating forest fires in the Ischigualasto natural park when it lost contact with base on Wednesday morning, emergency services said. The helicopter was en route to the neighbouring La Rioja province to assist in controlling a forest fire there.
San Juan Governor Marcelo Orrego expressed his condolences on social media, writing: "With profound sorrow we received the news of the helicopter accident that occurred in our province, in which seven people sadly lost their lives." He confirmed that the deceased included firefighters, police officers and civil protection personnel.
The causes of the accident are under investigation, according to a statement from provincial authorities.
