SCCL's first coal rake from Odisha reaches Telangana power plant

Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) achieved a significant logistical feat on Thursday when the first railway rake carrying coal from its Naini Coal Mine in Odisha arrived at the Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) in Jaipur, Mancherial district, Telangana. The coal travelled a distance of 1,131 km before reaching its destination.

The rake, loaded at the Hindol railway siding near the Naini Mine, carried approximately 4,000 tonnes of premium G-10 grade coal in 59 BOXN wagons, according to an SCCL press release. This consignment is intended to support Telangana's growing power generation needs, in line with directives from the state government.

This marks the first time that coal from an SCCL-owned mine outside Telangana has been transported to the state. The arrival of the rake was marked by a gathering of officers and employees at the STPP, who celebrated the successful operation.

Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who is currently on an official visit abroad, addressed the occasion through a video message. He described the event as a historic achievement and congratulated the SCCL management and employees for their efforts. He reiterated the state government's commitment to strengthening SCCL and noted that the government had recently facilitated the allocation of the Tadicherla-II and Manugur Dipside coal blocks to the company. He also expressed confidence that SCCL would diversify into critical and rare earth mineral exploration while expanding its operations to other states and overseas.

SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Buddhaprakash Jyoti, in a statement, thanked the governments of Telangana and Odisha, Indian Railways, and the officers and employees for ensuring the smooth transportation of the inaugural coal rake.

The successful movement of this rake underscores the growing inter-state logistical coordination required to meet energy demands. Coal remains a crucial component of India's energy mix, and thermal power plants such as STPP depend on reliable coal supply chains. For SCCL, this development opens avenues for utilising coal resources beyond Telangana, potentially enhancing the company's operational reach.

The STPP at Jaipur is one of the key power generation facilities in Telangana, and the arrival of coal from the Naini Mine is expected to contribute to the stability of power supply in the region. While the exact impact on power generation will depend on consistent supply, the successful first rake establishes a proof of concept for future shipments from SCCL's Odisha mine.

Observers note that this move aligns with broader efforts by state-owned mining companies to optimise coal availability and reduce dependence on external suppliers. It also highlights the role of railway infrastructure in linking mining areas with consumption centres across state boundaries.
