Russian strikes kill five in Ukraine, including child and rescue officer
Russian attacks killed at least five people in Ukraine on Sunday, according to regional officials. The strikes targeted areas in the southeast and northeast of the country, continuing the pattern of hostilities in the more than four-year-old conflict.
In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, regional Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that two people were killed and 16 others injured. Photographs posted by the governor showed a building on fire and parts of a neighbourhood reduced to rubble.
In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a missile strike on the town of Zmiiv killed one person and injured eight, including two children, according to Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Kharkiv is a frequent target of Russian attacks.
Separately, police in the Kharkiv region said an officer was killed while trying to organise the evacuation of residents in another community further north. In the Sumy region, also bordering Russia, the regional governor said an elderly woman was killed during the day in an area near the border.
Reuters could not independently verify the accounts from either side. Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians in the conflict, which has been ongoing for over four years.
