Retired school teacher, family killed in Bangladesh; two detained
In a tragic incident in Bangladesh's Rangpur city, a retired school teacher, his wife, and their two children were found dead at their residence on Friday night. The police have detained two men in connection with the killings.
The deceased were identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, according to the Daily Star newspaper.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said in a media briefing on Sunday (August 23, 2026) that the suspects, identified as Mughdho and Siddhartha, are cousins. They allegedly entered the rooftop of the Chakraborty home through a neighbouring building on Thursday night (August 20, 2026) and consumed the drug yaba there.
According to the police chief, Ganapati Chakraborty went to the rooftop after hearing noises and questioned the two men. To avoid being exposed, the suspects strangled him with a gamchha, a thin cotton towel he had been carrying on his shoulder. When his wife heard the commotion and went upstairs, she was also strangled with a piece of cloth on the staircase. Their daughter and son were also killed during the incident.
The bodies were recovered from the locked house in the Daspara area of Rangpur city around 11:30 p.m. on Friday (August 21, 2026). Police said the family had no known disputes or enmity with anyone, and no communal motive has been suggested in the investigation.
The incident has shocked the local community. Authorities are investigating the case, and the two suspects remain in custody. Further details are awaited.
