Indian expat killed, 9 injured in Oman vehicle crash amid weather alerts

One Indian national was killed and nine others injured after a vehicle veered off a road in Oman on Saturday, August 22, 2026, the Royal Oman Police said. The accident took place on Sultan Said bin Teymur Street in the Al Hema Governorate.

In a statement posted on X, the police said the incident resulted in one fatality and injuries to nine people of Indian nationality. All the injured were transferred to Nizwa Hospital by ambulance for medical treatment. Two of the injured were air-lifted by the police Air Wing from Al Hema Governorate to the hospital, the statement added. The police did not provide further details about the cause of the accident.

Earlier, authorities had warned of low visibility on highways in the region due to thunderstorms, heavy rain and blowing dust. The weather advisory was in effect across several parts of the Sultanate, and motorists were advised to exercise caution. However, the police have not yet confirmed whether adverse weather conditions contributed to the crash.

The deceased and the injured have been identified as Indian nationals, but their names have not been released. The Indian Embassy in Muscat is expected to provide consular assistance to the families. According to official figures, more than 600,000 Indians live and work in Oman, making them one of the largest expatriate communities in the country.

Road accidents remain a significant concern in the Gulf region, with speeding, distracted driving and sudden weather changes being common factors. In Oman, the government has launched several awareness campaigns to improve road safety, including strict enforcement of traffic laws and speed limits. The monsoon season, while rare, can bring sudden downpours that turn desert roads treacherous.

Saturday's crash has once again underscored the importance of adhering to weather advisories. The police have urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and to maintain safe distances between vehicles. An investigation into the accident has been launched.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the authorities.
