Reliance Industries Unveils Sovereign AI Ecosystem Plan, First Phase by 2026

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani on Friday announced the company's plan to build a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem in India. Speaking at the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Annual General Meeting (AGM), Ambani unveiled the Reliance Intelligence initiative, which will establish a cutting-edge AI infrastructure in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The infrastructure will be powered entirely by clean energy sourced from Reliance's own solar generation facilities at the Kutch renewable energy platform. Ambani stated that the first 120 megawatts of computing capacity will be commissioned by the end of 2026. This initial phase will deploy advanced NVIDIA GB300 graphics processing units (GPUs), offering compute capacity equivalent to more than 75,000 H100 GPUs on an AI-inference basis.

This move positions Reliance Industries as a key player in India's digital transformation, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign AI infrastructure. The sovereign AI backbone is expected to support various applications, including machine learning, natural language processing, and large-scale data analysis for industries ranging from healthcare to agriculture.

The announcement aligns with the Indian government's push for self-reliance in critical technologies. By leveraging clean energy, Reliance also addresses environmental concerns associated with high-power AI data centres. The company's integrated approach combines renewable energy generation with advanced computing to create a sustainable AI ecosystem.

While specific financial details were not disclosed, the project represents a significant investment in India's technology landscape. Reliance Intelligence is expected to collaborate with research institutions, startups, and enterprises to foster innovation and develop indigenous AI solutions.

Industry analysts view this as a strategic move to capitalise on the growing demand for AI services in India and globally. The infrastructure could potentially serve as a hub for AI research and development, attracting talent and investments into the country.

Ambani's announcement comes amid increasing global competition in AI capabilities, with countries like the United States, China, and the European Union investing heavily in computing infrastructure. Reliance's initiative is seen as a step towards ensuring India's technological sovereignty and competitiveness in the AI era.
