Rat in ice cream crate at Kalyan delivery hub prompts FDA inspection demand

A video recorded at a quick-commerce delivery hub in Kalyan’s Godrej Hill area has surfaced, showing a rat moving inside a crate containing ice cream. The footage has prompted residents to demand an inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and municipal authorities.

The facility is part of a major quick-commerce provider. In the video, the rodent is seen moving around the storage crate, raising concerns about hygiene and food safety. Residents have called for legal proceedings against the facility for alleged violations of food safety regulations.

This incident comes in the wake of a recent FDA action in Malad (West), Mumbai. On August 7, Food Safety Officers conducted an inspection at a facility at Sarvodaya Bhavan, Ramchandra Lane. The inspection reportedly found several violations, including food items placed on contaminated racks or directly on the floor, packaging deficiencies, poorly maintained cold-storage facilities, and the presence of expired, damaged, or tampered packaged goods.

According to the FDA, the unit also lacked insect and rodent control measures. Waste management practices were poor, and records of medical examinations and health documentation of food handlers were missing. The authority initiated action under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.

The food licence of the Malad unit was suspended with effect from July 27, 2026. The establishment has been prohibited from selling, distributing, or importing processed foods until further orders.

Residents of Kalyan have cited the Malad case in their appeal to the authorities. They have stated that the presence of rodents at delivery hubs poses a risk to public health and have urged the FDA to extend similar scrutiny to the Kalyan facility.

Quick-commerce companies handle perishable goods, including ice cream, which require strict temperature control and hygienic storage. Any lapse in these standards can lead to contamination and health risks for consumers. The FDA has the authority to inspect such facilities under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and to take action against non-compliant businesses.

The Food Safety and Standards Act also makes it mandatory for food handlers to undergo medical examinations and maintain health records. Regulations require pest control measures to be in place at all food premises. Non-compliance can result in suspension or cancellation of licences.

Neither the quick-commerce provider nor the FDA has issued a public statement regarding the Kalyan video at the time of reporting. The residents’ demand for an inspection highlights the need for regular checks and enforcement of food safety norms in rapidly expanding delivery networks.

Food safety is a critical public health concern, and authorities have a responsibility to ensure that all food businesses comply with established standards. The residents’ call for intervention reflects a broader need for vigilance in the quick-commerce sector, which has grown significantly in recent years.
