Rampur SP's remarks on cow slaughter trigger political row in U.P.

Rampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Anil Kumar Singh on Friday (August 7, 2026) sparked a political controversy with his remarks on cow slaughter, made during a media interaction at Police Lines. A video of his statement went viral on social media, drawing sharp reaction from opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh.

In the video, Mr. Singh said that those involved in cow slaughter are either "scoundrels and not true Muslims", adding that teaching them a lesson is part of his duty. He asserted that a true Muslim would not engage in such an act, and said that cow slaughter incidents reported during the holy month of Sawan were attempts by anti-social elements to disturb communal harmony.

The SP also referred to Islamic teachings, stating that the religion prohibits consuming meat from an animal if slaughtering it hurts the religious sentiments of another community.

Opposition leaders reacted sharply to the remarks. Senior Congress leader Anil Yadav alleged that the language used by the police officer reflects that the police institution under the BJP regime has become "violent and rowdy". He further stated that "the core problem is that the BJP government's policies towards the Muslim community embolden such officials who have a negative attitude towards the community."
