Ramanathapuram's Olympic Water Sports Academy Ready for Inauguration

The Tamil Nadu Olympic Water Sports Academy at Piraapanvalasai in Ramanathapuram district is ready for inauguration. Spread over six acres, this Rs. 42.90-crore project has been built on international standards and offers facilities for water polo, artistic swimming, rowing, surfing, and sailing.

The Ramanathapuram coastline is ideal for water sports due to predictable wind patterns and gentle waves. The region is emerging as a hub for kayak surfing and windsurfing. The academy leverages the shallow waters extending more than five kilometres into the sea, providing a controlled environment for stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, and beginner training.

Built with eco-friendly materials, the academy includes hostel facilities for 40 boys and 40 girls, along with 10 rooms for coaches. The building's frontage faces the sea with large windows, offering coaches a vantage point to observe athletes using binoculars. The premises are equipped with internet access for real-time communication and hi-tech classrooms for video analysis of athletes' performances.

Additional amenities include changing rooms, yoga rooms, physiotherapy rooms, and a gazebo for relaxation. District Sports Officer Dinesh Kumar stated that the academy is designed to host international players. 'Water sports athletes often travel the world following seasonal swells and wind patterns. For six months of the year, Piraapanvalasai enjoys very placid sea conditions, ideal for amateurs and veterans alike. We anticipate foreign athletes coming here to practice. The academy has all necessary infrastructure. We expect Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to inaugurate it in July,' he said.

Baskaran, a local water sports coach, noted that the academy would greatly benefit sailing enthusiasts in the area. 'It can be an excellent platform to train and nurture native talent,' he added. He also expressed hope that the government would provide jobs for local trainers once operations begin.
