Rajasthan Border Village: Religious Structure Demolished in Anti-Encroachment Drive; Opposition Cries Foul

The demolition of a religious structure in Malana village, located in Barmer district's Gadra Road area near the India-Pakistan border, has ignited a political controversy. The action, part of a broader drive to remove illegal constructions within a 15-kilometer radius of the international border, has drawn sharp criticism from the Congress party.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during a security review meeting in Bikaner last month, instructed district collectors and superintendents of police to clear illegal encroachments in sensitive border areas. Following this directive, the Barmer administration surveyed the region and identified unauthorised structures. A special survey is also underway to flag illegal buildings and scrutinise the funding sources of constructions in these vulnerable zones.

Congress leader Ashok Gehlot accused the central government of orchestrating the demolition with the intent to create tension and polarisation. He claimed the action was not about security but a deliberate move to stoke communal strife. The state government has, however, maintained that the operation is purely administrative and aimed at bolstering border security by removing encroachments that could pose risks.

The incident highlights the delicate balance between security imperatives and religious sentiments. While authorities emphasise the need to secure the border region, opposition parties question the timing and selective targeting of structures. The matter is expected to be raised in the state assembly, with demands for a thorough inquiry into the demolition process.

Local residents expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the government's security rationale and others feeling aggrieved by the loss of a place of worship. The administration has stated that no new structure will be built in the area without proper clearance, and that all necessary procedures were followed before the demolition.

As the political row escalates, the focus remains on the broader anti-encroachment drive in border areas, which the government says is essential for national security. The opposition, however, continues to demand transparency and accountability in the execution of such operations.
