Punjab Congress Turmoil: Baghel Rules Out Leadership Change Amidst Internal Strife
Amid ongoing internal discord within the Punjab Congress unit, party in-charge Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday dismissed any possibility of a change in the state leadership. Addressing media queries, Baghel stated that the decision to retain Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as state president stands firm, following consensus among state leaders.
Baghel's remarks came after a series of meetings with state leaders on Tuesday, even as a faction of disgruntled leaders reportedly gathered in New Delhi seeking audience with the party's central leadership. Notably absent from these meetings were former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
State Congress president Warring downplayed the crisis, expressing confidence that Channi would meet Baghel in the coming days. The internal friction intensified after the party's July 1 overhaul, which was intended to prepare for the assembly elections due in early 2027.
Baghel emphasized that the high command's decision is final, and no leadership changes are under consideration. He urged unity among party workers to focus on the upcoming electoral challenge.
