Priyanka Gandhi to Visit Wayanad Debris Slip Site, Meet Injured on July 25
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Wayanad Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is scheduled to visit the debris slip-affected area of Kalladi, near Meppadi, in her constituency in Kerala on Saturday, July 25. The visit aims to review ongoing relief and recovery operations following the disaster that occurred on July 7.
Ms. Vadra is expected to meet victims who were injured in the incident and are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Meppadi. She will also attend a felicitation ceremony for search and rescue teams who participated in the relief efforts.
The visit comes amid criticism from political opponents, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party, who questioned her absence in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. However, party sources have stated that the timing of the visit was deliberately delayed to avoid disrupting search and rescue operations. They said the visit now allows her to inspect the ground situation directly and support the ongoing recovery process.
The disaster occurred when incessant monsoon rain triggered a debris slip near the entrance to the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin-tube tunnel construction site near Meenakshi bridge. The incident claimed eight lives and left nine others injured, according to official reports.
According to party sources, Ms. Vadra’s itinerary includes a visit to Kalladi at 1 p.m., followed by a visit to Dr. Moopen’s Medical College to meet the injured. Her tour will conclude in Kalpetta, where she will attend a civic reception at Krishna Gowder Hall, Puliyarmala, to formally felicitate emergency response personnel and volunteer rescue teams for their relief work.
