Pregnant Women in Labour Referred from Govt Hospital at Night, Says Consumer Body

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection And Environmental Research Centre (TNCPERC), based in Tiruvarur, has called for comprehensive medical services for pregnant women at the Government Women and Children Hospital in Vijayapuram.

In a resolution passed during its monthly meeting in Tiruvarur on Sunday, the association noted that although the hospital’s bed capacity had been increased from 40 to 60 after the creation of additional infrastructure, pregnant women arriving with labour pains at night are being redirected to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Tiruvarur for delivery.

The TNCPERC has urged the State government to ensure that holistic medical care is provided to all pregnant women approaching the hospital until they deliver their babies, and has demanded the appointment of additional staff.

According to official sources, the Vijayapuram hospital records an average of 30 to 40 deliveries per month, with a daily average of 400 out-patients and around 30 in-patients. The association argued that filling vacant posts and installing necessary medical and testing equipment would prevent the need to redirect pregnant women seeking delivery at night.

In a separate resolution, the forum called on the Central government to regulate advertisements by financial companies that use prominent personalities, social media influencers, or AI-generated virtual avatars, to protect investors from being exploited.
