Prashant Kishor Takes Oath as Bihar MLA, Marking Entry into Elected Politics

Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, was sworn in as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Bankipur constituency at the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Monday, August 17, 2026. Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar administered the oath of office in a ceremony attended by fellow legislators and party workers.

Speaking to reporters after the oath-taking, Kishor expressed his pride in becoming a member of an Assembly that has been home to stalwarts such as Krishna Sinha, Karpoori Thakur, Anugrah Narayan Sinha, Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Kedar Pandey, Ram Vilas Paswan, and Sushil Kumar Modi. He described the moment as both an honour and a significant responsibility, adding that he wished to follow in the footsteps of hundreds of MLAs who dedicated years of their lives to the betterment of society and the state.

Kishor's entry into the Assembly comes after a historic electoral debut on August 3, when he won the bypoll for the Bankipur seat in a closely watched contest. The seat had been held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1995, making his victory a notable upset. Kishor polled 64,151 votes, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by a margin of 19,324 votes. Kumar received 44,827 votes.

The bypoll was necessitated after former BJP president Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his elevation to the Rajya Sabha. Bankipur, one of Bihar's most prestigious constituencies, has historically been a stronghold for the BJP, and the outcome was seen as a significant electoral shift.

Kishor, a well-known political strategist who has worked on successful campaigns for various parties across India, entered active politics in 2022 with the formation of the Jan Suraaj Party. His foray into contesting elections was closely followed by political observers, and his victory has been viewed as a reflection of changing voter preferences in urban Bihar.

The new MLA's presence in the Assembly is expected to bring a different dynamic, given his background as an election strategist and his focus on issues such as governance, education, and healthcare. In his brief address, Kishor emphasised the importance of constructive opposition and cooperative federalism, stating that his goal is to work for the development of Bihar through collaborative efforts with all members of the House.

Political analysts note that Kishor's victory has injected fresh energy into state politics, and his performance as an MLA will be closely monitored in the coming months. The Jan Suraaj Party has expressed confidence that Kishor's experience and understanding of policy issues will enable him to represent the interests of Bankipur's diverse electorate effectively.

As the monsoon session of the Assembly continues, all eyes will be on Kishor's first interventions and his approach to issues affecting the constituency and the state at large. His commitment to maintaining the dignity of the House and upholding democratic values has been welcomed by both ruling and opposition parties.
