PM Modi urges dialogue, welcomes Iran-US understanding in call with Iranian President
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, as Iran prepares for the state burial of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The phone call came amid a fragile peace in the Gulf region following a June 17 understanding between the United States and Iran.
During the conversation, President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi on recent developments in West Asia and the way forward. The Prime Minister welcomed the understanding reached, reiterating India's consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, according to a government press note.
Mr. Modi also emphasized the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, and for safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce. The call follows an earlier invitation from President Pezeshkian for Mr. Modi to attend the funeral in Tehran. However, the Prime Minister is unlikely to travel; India will be represented by a delegation led by Bihar Governor Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain (retd.) and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
The funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is expected to begin on July 3 and continue until July 9, with events in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. The Supreme Leader's death marks a significant transition in Iran's political landscape.
