PM Modi leads International Day of Yoga in Kolkata, guides participants through asanas
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrating the 12th International Day of Yoga on Sunday from Kolkata’s Red Road. He guided thousands of participants through the Common Yoga Protocol session, performing asanas alongside the gathering.
The event was held at the historic Red Road, flanked by the Indian Army’s Eastern Command headquarters on one side and the sprawling Maidan on the other. During the early morning session, the Prime Minister was seen helping participants perfect their yoga postures through physical demonstration.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “June 21, which marks the longest day on Earth, has now become the largest community celebration day because of yoga. Yoga brings people together. I congratulate the people of the world on this occasion.”
This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, highlights the role of yoga in promoting physical health, mental well-being and active ageing. The Prime Minister emphasised that yoga is not merely physical exercise but “an expression of the human spirit” that is not restricted to any age group.
Yoga Day celebrations are planned at nearly 2,500 locations across the world on June 21. Over 210 Indian missions and posts globally are participating, reaffirming yoga’s status as a global movement for health and harmony, according to a statement quoted by news agency PTI.
