PM Modi Leads 12th International Yoga Day from Kolkata's Red Road, Stresses Yoga's Unifying Power

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations from the historic Red Road in Kolkata. The event, which began early morning, drew thousands of participants who joined the Prime Minister in a series of yoga asanas and breathing exercises.

In his address to the gathering, Mr. Modi noted that June 21, the longest day of the year, has now become the largest community celebration day because of yoga. “Yoga brings people together; I congratulate people of the world on this occasion. Yoga is not just physical exercise, not restricted to any age group; it is expression of human spirit,” he said.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Yoga is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlighting the role of yoga in promoting physical health, mental well-being, emotional resilience, and active ageing. The theme aligns with the global focus on improving quality of life for older populations.

The choice of Kolkata for the main event holds significance. Red Road, a historic parade ground in the heart of the city, has been the venue for many national celebrations. The event saw participation from various state governments, yoga institutions, and citizens from all walks of life.

The International Day of Yoga was established by the United Nations in 2014 following a proposal by Prime Minister Modi. Since then, it has been observed annually on June 21, with events held across the world. The day aims to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga for physical and mental health.

During the event, experts demonstrated various yoga postures suitable for different age groups, emphasising that yoga is a practice for everyone. The Prime Minister also interacted with participants and highlighted the government’s initiatives to promote yoga and traditional wellness systems.

Yoga, an ancient Indian practice, has gained global recognition for its holistic benefits. The World Health Organization has included yoga in its guidelines for physical activity. Regular practice of yoga is known to reduce stress, improve flexibility, and enhance overall health.

The event in Kolkata was part of a nationwide celebration, with similar events in cities and towns across India. The Ministry of AYUSH coordinated the programme, ensuring adherence to safety protocols. Many countries also organised local events to mark the day.

In his closing remarks, the Prime Minister urged people to incorporate yoga into their daily lives. “Yoga is not a onetime activity. It is a journey towards a healthier and happier life,” he said.
