PM Modi honours Quit India Movement heroes on 84th anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (August 9, 2026) paid tribute to the participants of the historic Quit India Movement, saying their courage will always remain an inspiration for every Indian. The movement, launched under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi on August 9, 1942, is considered a decisive turning point in India's struggle for independence from British colonial rule.

In a post on X, Mr. Modi wrote: "Remembering all those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement. Their courage will always remain an inspiration for every Indian." He further noted that the clarion call of Quit India infused new energy into the freedom struggle and reflected the unwavering determination of the people to break free from colonial rule.

The Quit India Movement, also known as the August Movement, was initiated at the All-India Congress Committee session in Bombay (now Mumbai) on August 8, 1942. In his famous address, Mahatma Gandhi gave the call for "Do or Die" and demanded an immediate end to British rule. The British authorities responded with mass arrests of Congress leaders, including Gandhi, and a violent crackdown on protesters. Despite the suppression, the movement spread across the country, with widespread strikes, demonstrations, and acts of civil disobedience.

Historians regard the Quit India Movement as a pivotal moment that accelerated the transfer of power. The British government, weakened after World War II, realised that holding on to India was no longer sustainable. The movement also demonstrated the unity and resolve of the Indian masses, drawing participation from all sections of society, including students, women, and rural communities.

The 84th anniversary of the movement comes at a time when India completed 79 years of independence in 2026. These anniversaries serve as reminders of the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters whose names may not all be recorded in history books, but whose collective effort led to the nation's freedom on August 15, 1947.

Political leaders across the spectrum, as well as citizens, have been remembering the movement on social media. Opposition leaders have also called for reflecting on the values of self-rule and the need to uphold the constitutional ideals that the movement sought to achieve.

In his post, Mr. Modi's words echoed the sentiment of national pride and gratitude. The Prime Minister's tribute highlights the enduring relevance of the Quit India Movement in reminding contemporary India of its democratic heritage and the importance of vigilance against any form of authoritarianism, a theme often invoked in public discourse.

As the nation observes the anniversary, historians and educators emphasise the need to preserve and pass on the memory of the movement to younger generations. In a time when lessons from history are increasingly debated, the Quit India Movement stands as a testament to the power of non-violent resistance and collective action.

Study: Wayanad Landslides Were a Product of Climate and Geology Together

A new study on the 2024 Wayanad landslides reveals that extreme rainfall triggered the disaster, but underlying geological conditions such as shear zones and weathering determined its location and severity. Researchers used field mapping and drone LiDAR to show how natural dams and rock structures intensified the debris flow.
