Patient Dies After Ceiling Fan Crashes on Him at Delhi's GTB Hospital
A 42-year-old patient died hours after a ceiling fan fell on him at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Northeast Delhi on Saturday night, police said. The incident has raised concerns about safety standards in one of the capital's largest government hospitals.
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Akbar, was receiving treatment in Emergency Ward 27 when the ceiling fan allegedly became detached and fell onto his bed around 9:30 pm, according to eyewitnesses. Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
Hospital authorities, however, denied that the fan's fall directly caused the patient's death, attributing it to his underlying health conditions. A hospital spokesperson stated that the patient was critically ill prior to the incident and that the fan's fall was not the sole cause of death.
The incident has sparked outrage among patient families and local activists, who have demanded a thorough inquiry and improved maintenance of hospital infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has ordered a probe into the matter.
