Parliamentary Panel Scrutinises Central Recruitment, CSAT, and Vacancies
A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Sunday reviewed the status of vacancies in central government departments and discussed issues related to civil services recruitment, including the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The committee, headed by BJP leader and former IPS officer Brij Lal, examined the number of vacancies currently available in various departments, whether recruitment has been conducted against those posts, and the progress made in filling them.
Speaking after the meeting, Brij Lal said the committee also reviewed the role of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in the recruitment process. The panel is part of ongoing parliamentary oversight to ensure timely and transparent hiring for government positions.
The discussion comes amid concerns over delays in government recruitment and the effectiveness of exams like the CSAT, which is a qualifying paper in the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination. Critics have argued that the CSAT, introduced in 2011, may disadvantage certain candidates, while supporters say it tests aptitude fairly. The committee's review may lead to recommendations for changes in the recruitment framework.
In a related development, the UPSC announced that it will release answer keys for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination immediately after the exam for the first time, a move aimed at increasing transparency. The committee welcomed this step but sought further clarity on implementation.
The meeting also highlighted the large number of unfilled posts across central ministries and the need to expedite the recruitment process. The committee urged the DoPT and SSC to streamline their procedures and adopt technology to reduce delays.
