Parliament Monsoon Session: Day 4 Deadlock Over NEET Issue Continues

The fourth day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament is expected to witness continued disruptions as Opposition MPs press for a discussion on alleged police action against students in New Delhi and demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak controversy.

Both Houses have been unable to transact any business since the session began on July 20, with repeated adjournments due to protests by Opposition parties. The government has expressed willingness to discuss the NEET issue, but the Congress party insists on a suspension of all other business under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha and Rule 56 in the Lok Sabha before the discussion. Opposition leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, remain firm on their demand for the minister's resignation.

According to the revised list of business for the day, the Lok Sabha is scheduled to debate the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, for consideration and passing. A statutory resolution moved by Opposition members Sougata Ray, NK Premachandran, and Adv. Dean Kuriakose, expressing disapproval of the Bill, is also on the agenda. Additionally, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is set to present several critical reports.

The continued deadlock raises concerns about legislative productivity, with key pending bills and discussions being stalled. Both sides have shown no signs of compromise, setting the stage for another day of political confrontation.
