Paper Leak Fallout: NEET Retest Triggers Fresh Anxiety for Lakhs

Nearly 23 lakh candidates are set to appear for the NEET UG retest on Sunday, after the original exam on May 3 was cancelled due to a paper leak. For many aspirants, the past month has been fraught with anxiety and uncertainty.

Yash, a 25-year-old from Haryana's Rewari, had hoped his eighth attempt at the medical entrance exam would finally secure him a government seat. But the cancellation shattered that hope. 'Now, there is pressure to match it or do even better,' he said from his hostel in Kota, Rajasthan.

Shantanu Kacher, a 20-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, described the weeks as more draining than years of preparation. 'After May 3, I stopped studying completely. When the cancellation happened, it felt like somebody had suddenly told me that the last two years weren't over. But I am hoping this time will be another chance for a better score.'

Abhinav Agarwal from Delhi noted that the uncertainty has been overwhelming. 'This year, students are even more anxious because they think they know what they have already achieved and are scared of losing it.' He reported struggling with sleep, waking up in the middle of the night thinking about missed concepts.

Social media has amplified stress, with endless discussions about cut-offs and paper patterns. 'If someone says they solved three mock tests today, suddenly you feel guilty about solving only one,' Agarwal said. The National Testing Agency (NTA) clarified that circulating posts about paper leaks were 'not authentic.'

In an affidavit to the Supreme Court, the NTA stated that a 'High-Powered Steering Committee' reviewed all aspects and recommended safeguards. The retest is being conducted under enhanced security involving multiple central agencies, railways, and school systems like Kendriya Vidyalayas.

Parvez, a 25-year-old from Moradabad, expressed a common sentiment: 'Some students were disappointed after the first exam. Others were happy. But at least everybody had closure. The cancellation took away that closure.'
