Pakistan's Interior Minister Visits Iran After US-Iran Talks Postponed
Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Iran on Saturday, following the postponement of planned talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland, Iranian media reported.
Tehran and Washington were scheduled to hold negotiations in Switzerland on Friday after signing a memorandum of understanding to end hostilities in the Middle East. However, the latest round of talks has been delayed with no new date announced.
Iranian media, including Tasnim news agency, reported that Minister Naqvi landed in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Saturday. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei told ISNA news agency that Naqvi's visit is part of Pakistan's efforts regarding the Iran-US negotiations.
During his visit, Naqvi is expected to meet Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for discussions, according to Baghaei.
Pakistan has served as a key mediator between Tehran and Washington, with Qatar also joining mediation efforts leading up to the deal announced this week.
The conflict began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military commanders. Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes that drew in countries across the region. An April truce halted the worst of the fighting.
On Thursday, Iran announced it had signed a deal with the United States to end hostilities, with the aim of holding further negotiations on a broader agreement that would include Iran's long-contested nuclear programme.
