Pakistan SC Orders Hospital Transfer for Imran Khan Amid Health Fears
The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday (August 18, 2026) ordered that former Prime Minister Imran Khan be shifted from jail to a hospital within 48 hours, his party said. The ruling addresses long-standing demands from his family and political allies, who have repeatedly raised concerns about his health.
Mr. Khan, a 73-year-old former cricketer, has been in detention since August 2023. He was convicted in a string of cases that he says were politically driven following his removal from power in 2022. His lawyers have previously said that he has lost significant vision in his right eye while in custody. His sons had also voiced concern about his deteriorating health last year.
Reacting to the court's order, PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari said, “It's a very welcome order and we wish it had happened sooner so his eye and general health would not have deteriorated this much.” He added, “He should remain in hospital until all doctors are satisfied.”
Mr. Khan's spokesperson Naeem Haider Panjutha said on social media platform X that the court directed the former premier be moved to Shifa International Hospital and remain there until September 16. The order gives authorities 48 hours to facilitate the transfer.
Since losing a no-confidence vote in 2022, Mr. Khan has faced multiple legal cases, including allegations related to state gifts and an unlawful marriage. Some of his convictions have been suspended or overturned by higher courts, with appeals still pending. He denies all charges against him.
In February, cricket greats from around the world, including from India, had appealed for better treatment for Mr. Khan, expressing “deep concern” about his prison conditions. The former cricket captain enjoys a wide following across the subcontinent.
PTI, which came to power in 2018, retains a significant support base in key provinces of Pakistan. However, ahead of the 2024 general elections, the party was stripped of its electoral symbol, forcing its candidates to contest as independents. The court's latest order is seen as a relief for the party, which has alleged that Mr. Khan's detention is politically motivated.
The Supreme Court's decision marks a rare intervention in the ongoing legal disputes involving the former prime minister. It remains to be seen how the transfer will be implemented and what medical treatment Mr. Khan will receive at the hospital.
